How should I attract the sparrows to have food from the bird feeder ? The birds take from few days to months to occupy the feeder as it is a natural process. What can be helpful is if one puts some grains in the plate. You can put broken rice in the feeder in this summer season.A bowl of clean water is also quite helpful to attract them but care must be taken not to put any water in the bird feeder or in the plate of the bird feeder. - Mohammed Dilawar (Nature Forever Society) I was unable to get the bird feeders being distributed free of cost. How do I get one? Send a request by email to Burhani Foundation (India) Office at BFI52@YAHOO.CO.IN |

We woke up every morning to the bright sunlight streaming into our room and the
loud chirp wafting in from the balcony! When I was a small child, my father would
take us to the terrace and introduce us to our winged friends – pigeons, crows,
eagles, mynahs and of course sparrows. It helped that he took a handful of grain
and invited the birds to come and feast. And they would come in dozens, creating
a swirl of black and grey, feeding continuously and chattering and cheeping noisily
before taking wings again. It was a sight I grew up on every morning. It was a sight that helped me easily identify their picture in my colouring books. It was a sight that became etched in my young memory. When I became a little older, the noisy twitter, amplified manifold in a small verandah, was like an alarm clock announcing the arrival of the day. It was a signal for us to wake up, say our prayers and run-off to school. Even before mum came in, we were half-way dressed as we grumbled and complained, “chakliyo ye uthavi kaara” (the sparrows woke us up). In the humdrum of life, the balcony gave way to the television, the colouring books gave way to computer games, the humble alarm clock gave way to stylish ring tones and the twitter gave way to tweets! Soon, the common sparrow became extremely uncommon and with great difficulty and much luck one could sight a bird. For me, the last decade or so represents a complete black-out as I do not recall seeing a single sparrow. The bread crumbs left for them remain untouched the next morning. The sparrows completely vanished off the sky. Until something interesting happened. Maula Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (TUS), initiated the Save Our Sparrow (SOS, rightly abbreviated so!) project to commemorate the historic centennial celebrations. It is fascinating that a mighty emperor like Him would choose to be actively involved in such a simple but remarkably powerful and far-reaching mission like the SOS project. Under the aegis of the Burhani Foundation, SOS has distributed thousands of ‘bird feeders’, a carefully-designed grain-storing apparatus to invite sparrows to feed off them. My work takes me to several places and I have myself seen several such bird feeders hanging out of balconies and windows in Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hasanpir, Burhanpur, Hyderabad, Cochin, Nagpur, Coimbatore, Delhi…. In fact, the bird feeder has become a flag to identify a mumin residence! As early as last week, I woke up to a delightful sight. A sight that brought back a flood of childhood memories – two sparrows playfully sparring in my balcony, chirping endlessly! As I rushed out to the veranda, I saw another three sitting on a branch. Yes, the sparrow is back! This is indeed Maula’s mojiza to resuscitate the small stocky brown-winged bird that my generation grew up on – the sparrow! Today, my father is back in the balcony introducing pigeons, crows, eagles, mynahs – and of course sparrows – to his grand daughter! |

| Hussain | Pune | The bird feeder has gone a complete success at my house, we have kept it on a table near a window. Actually we are providing sparrows and pigeons food and water from around 7 years daily, so my suggestion is that you should try to advertise about keeping a small water vessel with the feeder,as what i have experienced is that birds are able to get food easily(grains from ration shops, insects,ya sparrows eat insects, have seen them eating cockroaches and rain bugs etc) but its very hard for water,we get to see wild pigeons coming from far far away to our home to drink water itself, for pigeons we have kept a half cut old pot of water which holds a half a litre of water,it gets drunk by pigeons in 1/2 hour to 45 mins... We give water to sparrows in a diff window to avoid clashes, a small sized container like a lunch box is enough for a day, guaranteed you can expect a large number of birds if you provide water. If they find a proper sized vessel, they even have a bath in it!! Its so wonderful to watch that. So i suggest if you could just add to the movement of sos, just a statement to provide water it would be really really beneficial for the birds during this summer season. |

The distributors in charge did take my mobile numbers assuring me that i would hear from them in 15 days or so and could then get bird feeder then. However there has been no contact from them so far. I also am not aware of shops where such bird feeders would be available ..atleast not too expensive. Kindly help me or guide me. Also need some information regarding the sparrows ..i heard that one can make temporary nests for the sparrows by using cardboard boxes and hanging them in the garden...is it tru.? Is there any other way of making nests for them ? |
