Projects

Since its inception in 1991, the Burhani Foundation (India) - BFI, has continuously striven to create ecological and environmental awareness amongst the masses. Bearing in mind, the message of their spiritual leader - "Harmony with nature", BFI has launched several projects on a national scale. Details of some of the most successful ones are given here.

Burhani Foundation (India) - BFI in association with the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) has in its endeavor to encourage and promote environmental research and development, instituted the "BFI-NEERI Award" for outstanding and socially relevant Research & Development in Environmentally Sound Technologies.

Nominations were invited every year from leading technical and scientific institutions having a track record for encouraging applied research in preventive environmental management by making effective use of their resources while aiming to achieve sustainable economic growth targets.

The Award aims to recognize the contribution of Indian environmental scientists towards achieving the above goals by promoting technologies that, protect and improve environment. This could be done by implementing practical low-cost solutions, minimizing polluting, using all their resources in a more sustainable manner, by recycling waste products, and being able to handle residual wastes in a more acceptable manner.

The First BFI - NEERI Award for outstanding and socially relevant R & D in Environmentally Sound Technologies has been awarded to:

1. Prof. Dr. H.M.Chawla, I.I.T. Delhi
2. Dr. S.Sivasankar, NCL Pune

The Award was presented on the World Environment Day - 5th June 1998 and consisted of Citation and Cash Prize of Rs.1 lakh.

School Children's Competition

The primary objective of the "Clean Sweep Bonanza Contest" that was organized by the Burhani Foundation (India) in Mumbai was to educate children on major environmental issues. Students from all communities enthusiastically participated in this contest.

The contest was also held in other places throughout India. 10,000 forms were printed & distributed throughout India by the Project Officers of BFI. In Mumbai, the Taheri Scouts Group volunteered to visit the residences of several participants to deliver and collect the completed entry forms.

The participating schools appreciated the project and willingly extended their support. The contest was a great success! BFI received entries in five different categories as mentioned in the "Contest" folder. The Timex Wrist Watch was presented by BFI to winners who stood 1st, while at other Centers the local Jamats awarded the 2nd, 3rd & Consolation Prizes to the respective winners. The entries received at various centers were judged locally by competent persons. In Mumbai, the results of the "Clean Sweep Bonanza Contest" were telecast on the local cable TV stations.

Vermiculture

Vermiculture is an innovative type of technology, which does not call for expensive laboratories or sophisticated industrial equipment. The best place to rear earthworms is in the soil itself. It is in this soil that they feed on organic wastes.

Vermiculture effectively combines soil processing with waste processing as a two-in-one package. When biodegradable wastes (in the form of mulch) are applied to the soil containing earthworms, the action is triggered off almost at once. Hence, the earthworm has given man the unbelievable power to recycle his garbage into a valuable fertilizer.

Burhani Foundation's Vermiculture projects have been successfully implemented at several places including Burhanpur, Sidhpur and Surat through their respective Jamats. This technology can also be practiced at the home, by separating kitchen wastes from the garbage pile and placing it on the soil containing earthworms. Several residential buildings in Mumbai have found this process to be very clean and ideal for waste disposal. The Burhani Foundation has published a booklet providing easy to work information on this subject.

University-Industry-Science-Partnership (UNISPAR)

The General Conference of UNESCO at its 27th session in 1993 approved the UNISPAR (University-Industry-Science Partnership) Program which aims at promoting international co-operation in networking and information dissemination, as well as assisting UNESCO member states, particularly developing countries, in identifying and implementing University - Industry joint projects.

The main goals of the Program :

1. Adapting the university engineering education to suit industrial needs.
2. Promotion of partnerships between universities and industry for retaining practicing engineers (continuing engineering education).
3. Identifying effective ways to improve the transfer of research results to the industry.
4. Providing assistance to UNESCO member states in creating or strengthening effective University - Industry - Science ties. A National Working Group has been functioning in India since 1996.

Center for Environmental Studies

Burhani Foundation (India) has established a Center for Environmental Studies at Visakhapatnam, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, where research projects are identified and implemented. After taking into account the local conditions the research has provided sensible low-cost solutions for industrial problems. The Center has a well-equipped laboratory and a team of experts from various disciplines dedicated to the cause of the environment and its sustainable development. The Center provides the following services:

* Sampling and routine analyses of waters, waste waters and industrial stack gases.
* Plant studies and designs of low cost waste treatment systems with appropriate technology.
* Mathematical and numerical modeling of dispersing pollutants in the air and ground water.
* Analyzing the hazardous effects of fires and toxic gas leaks.
* Preparation of Environmental Impact Analysis (EIA) Reports.
* Designing water supply, sewerage and plumbing systems.
* Organizing technical short-term courses on environmental issues in industries.
* Facilitating research projects for environmental students.
* Interacting with local institutes on environmental research projects.
* Creating environmental awareness through campaigns, competitions, exhibitions, pamphlets, etc.
* Co-sponsoring environmental projects for local NGOs.

Burhani Foundation will be happy to answer any queries from the public and guide students on environmental themes. Industrial problems can also be referred to the center. The Center has been appointed by the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) as a member of their Industrial Safety Committee to monitor the industries in and around Vizag. The Center also advises clients on safety measures and risk management.
